The Canvas Project- Interview

The Canvas Project officially launched last night at Tone in Surry Hills, with new music from Brendan Maclean, Elizabeth Rose, Cupid Against Venus, Doc Jones and the Lechery Orchestra and Lovers Jump Creek. Artists Steven Nuttall and Maurice Franco were painting in the space whilst canvases done by artists/musicians/experimentalists from the project lined the walls.

Interview (excerpt) with Ryan O’Donnell :

“Walking into the intimate studio spaces of Nicola Walkerden, you can already feel the emotive strength of her multi-disciplinary approach to art-making. Canvas caught up with Walkerden to talk dreams, shared experience, and her plans for revolt, Ryan O’Donnell writes.

Describing herself as “a curious person by nature”, Walkerden’s overall aim is to question both how the world works, and how it doesn’t work. Drawing her inspiration from her own personal narratives and the experiences of those around her, her art deals strongly with notions of the human condition and shared collective experience. There is, however, a degree of openness to her work:

“There is always more than one perspective … there are many layers of meaning that can be drawn out”.
