Rings & Divisions – On Saturn’s Edge

2014 – 2016
5:51 minutes
collaboration single channel 16mm & super8 film to digital moving image, with original composition ‘On Saturn’s Edge’ by Olga Solar
Nikki Walkerden & Olga Solar

Thinking about the rings of Saturn and the gaps in between known as divisions, moving images spin through fields of space created by the corporeality of 16mm film. Being on Saturn’s edge resonates, as orbiting sounds create a percussive flight. A mixture of digital, super8, scratch-animated 16mm film and found footage offer a mesmeric, painterly vision of space in play with acoustic musical forms. This collaboration between Olga Solar and Nikki Walkerden began as part of The Cosmos Project by the Spacebears Collective, screening in concert at the Sydney Conservatorium of Music (2014) and exhibited in Gallery 2010. It was shown in ‘BLACKMODULAR (first edition)’ curated by David Haines & Joyce Hinterding, presented by Modern Art Projects (2014). In 2016 a new version of the work is presented, screening at Kino Sydney, MAPSPACE (Blue Mountains Cultural Centre) and Is This Art? presented by dLux Media Arts for the Spectrum Now Festival.
